Enhancing Education for Future Teachers While Giving Young Students a Head Start in Learning

Midland College expanded its West Texas campus to address critical gaps in early childhood education and teacher shortages. The new 60,000-square-foot, two-story facility houses the Pre-Kindergarten Academy and a dedicated floor for classrooms and administrative offices, supporting the college’s new Early Childhood Education bachelor’s degree program. The academy has increased its capacity from 68 to 288 students, providing much-needed opportunities for young learners in the region.

Overcoming Adversity

The project faced the challenge of a tight timeline, requiring construction documents to be ready in five months and the entire project completed in just 14 months, aligning with the Fall semester. Despite the current hurdles of labor shortages, rising material costs, and schedule constraints, Parkhill’s team kept the project on track.

Building the Future

Midland College President Dr. Steve Thomas highlights the impact: “This project addresses two major challenges—shortages of early education opportunities and qualified teachers. It reflects our commitment to helping our community grow and prosper.”
