Friona ISD Primary School

How Design Can Inspire Young Learners

To address the need for a dedicated Primary School, Parkhill designed a 36,000-square-foot addition to Friona Elementary, creating a vibrant space for Pre-K, Kindergarten, and First Grade students. The school is organized into three major hubs, each featuring a storm shelter for community safety.

A Colorful Environment for Growth and Learning

Parkhill’s design emphasizes energy and optimism, with each hub branded in eye-catching colors: chartreuse for Pre-K (symbolizing growth and nature), cyan for Kindergarten (representing energy and youth), and fuchsia for First Grade (reflecting playfulness and cheerfulness). These colors flow across walls, floors, and ceilings, creating a cohesive and engaging learning environment.

Connecting Community and Creativity

Every interior element, from antimicrobial flooring to hexagon-shaped carpets, incorporates these hub colors, making the space lively and inviting. Thoughtful wayfinding graphics enhance navigation for students, staff, and visitors. Parkhill’s custom graphics, inspired by Friona’s local businesses, careers, and landmarks, celebrate the community’s Panhandle pride and agricultural roots. These designs aim to connect students to their heritage while inspiring them to carry a piece of Friona with them wherever they go.

Safe and Innovative Design Solutions

The school’s design includes a storm shelter for safety, along with a courtyard and amphitheater that creatively address drainage issues. This project not only meets the functional needs of the Friona community but also fosters a love for learning and pride in local culture.
