American Institute of Architects Renovation

The headquarters for the American Institute of Architects (AIA) in Washington, D.C., has a new look and a new name — the AIA Global Campus for Architecture & Design (GCAD). The five-year renovation honors the original structure’s history, reflects AIA’s growth, and embodies the global mission of the architecture profession.

Dan Hart, FAIA, PE, the GCAD Building Committee Chair, was AIA’s 98th president in 2022, and has been involved with the Building Committee from its inception. The Brutalist concrete building, originally designed by The Architects’ Collaborative in 1973, has been transformed, and its campus has been opened to the public to reflect a renewed focus on community and environmental stewardship.

Dan said, “This is a huge opportunity [to say] what’s important in architecture right now [is] being less insular and more outward-facing and present. This project embodies that mission in a physical way.”
