Construction of the new Panhandle State Hospital in Amarillo recently reached a major milestone as crews set the final major piece of structure, officially topping out the new behavioral health facility.

Parkhill, in partnership with Page and Stantec, is helping bring the ground-up hospital to life. The three-story, 75-bed facility will provide inpatient psychiatric care for communities across 26 counties, expanding access to mental health services for people throughout the Texas Panhandle.

Designed with a 100-year lifespan in mind, the hospital represents a significant long-term investment in behavioral health care for the region.

Designing a Place for Healing

The design of Panhandle State Hospital balances safety and functionality with an environment focused on patient comfort and dignity. Private patient rooms will provide greater comfort and privacy, while secure outdoor spaces will offer opportunities for therapeutic activities and time outside. Abundant natural light throughout the facility will contribute to a more welcoming, restorative environment.

The hospital also incorporates reliable backup power and redundant building systems to support around-the-clock operations and continuity of care. Together, these features are designed to serve the needs of patients and staff both when the facility opens and well into the future.

The topping-out milestone marks significant progress toward completing a facility that will expand access to inpatient psychiatric care closer to home for residents across the Panhandle.

As construction continues, Panhandle State Hospital is taking shape as more than a new health care facility. It is a long-term investment in the region and the patients, staff, families, and communities it will serve for generations.
