Whitaker Fields at the University of Texas at Austin
College recreation is about more than competition. It’s an opportunity for students to connect, recharge and build lasting memories. At the University of Texas at Austin, the renovation of Whitaker Fields reimagines a 35-acre recreational sports complex as a destination for athletics and everyday campus life. Parkhill’s site design balances high-performance playing fields with inviting outdoor spaces, creating a flexible environment that supports everything from intramural games and tournaments to festivals, concerts and casual gatherings.

Making Room for More Play
Six synthetic turf fields complement 12 natural grass fields, expanding scheduling flexibility and reducing wear on existing turf. The design takes advantage of the site’s natural slopes to create spectator seating, while low-glare athletic lighting supports evening activities with minimal impact on surrounding neighborhoods.
Connecting Recreation and Campus Life
A central pedestrian plaza, scenic walking trails, sand volleyball courts and landscaped gathering spaces extend the experience beyond the playing fields. A sloped amphitheater provides another place for students to gather, turning the complex into a welcoming hub for recreation and connection.

Designing More Beneath the Surface
Thoughtful infrastructure improvements help the site work harder without sacrificing usable space. Beneath the synthetic turf fields, an integrated stormwater detention system manages runoff while maximizing land available for recreation. Together with drainage, irrigation and utility upgrades, these solutions support a durable, adaptable campus destination.
