Building Community Initiative (BCI) delivered a check for $6,271.44 to the Construction Technology Class at Lubbock ISD’s Byron Martin Advanced Technology Center (ATC) for the purchase of 25 tool belts and a selection of basic carpentry hand tools.

This is the second time that BCI has given a grant to the Construction Technology program as it has doubled in size due to its popularity and a second class was opened.

The main project that this class undertakes each year is building a home for Lubbock Habitat for Humanity on the school’s back lot and then it is trucked to the Habitat neighborhood and set on a foundation. This provides the students with real-world, hands-on experience. The ATC programs for electrical, mechanical and plumbing trades are also involved in building the house and receive the same real-world, hands-on experience.

The ATC offers classes for students from each of the five high schools in Lubbock ISD, focused on giving every student access to a truly complete education, with an emphasis on College & Career Readiness.

The Construction Technology Class I offers students the basics and understanding of carpentry. The program’s teachers, who are experts in their fields, provide instruction that is balanced with a combination of abundant hands-on time and instruction that is meaningful, real-world, and connected.
