Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) recently celebrated the ribbon cutting of its new Student Academic Services (SAS) building on the Portales campus, marking an important milestone in the university’s commitment to supporting student success.

Designed by Parkhill, the approximately 25,000-square-foot facility brings essential student services together under one roof, creating a more convenient and welcoming environment for students navigating their academic journeys.

Bringing Student Services Together

From enrollment and financial aid to academic advising and counseling, students rely on a variety of resources throughout their academic journeys. The new SAS building brings these services together in one location, along with Student Affairs, Student Disability Services, Testing, and Registrar Records.

Parkhill worked closely with departmental users to understand their space needs and how the departments interact, creating a layout that supports daily operations, collaboration, and convenient access for students and families.

Connecting Campus History With Modern Design

Located along the northern historic core of ENMU’s Portales campus, the new SAS building replaces the former Harding Hall dormitory and establishes a welcoming new campus presence.

Defining the eastern edge of the northern historic quadrangle, the building draws inspiration from the campus’s Jacobean and Collegiate Gothic Revival architectural styles, connecting the new facility to ENMU’s architectural heritage.

Modern features, including clerestory windows and skylights, introduce abundant natural daylight into the interior, creating bright, inviting spaces for students, faculty, and staff.

Designed to pursue LEED Silver certification, the project also incorporates bicycle storage, shower facilities, and landscape improvements that reduce turf areas and supplemental irrigation needs, supporting water conservation in the region’s drought-prone climate.

By combining essential student resources with thoughtful design, the new Student Academic Services building strengthens ENMU’s campus environment and supports the students who will shape its future.
