Parkhill is pleased to announce the hiring of James Cummings as Construction Phase Practice Leader based in the Frisco, Texas, office. In this role, James will guide the strategic development, oversight, and continuous improvement of construction phase services within Parkhill’s Architecture Division. He will also ensure consistent construction administration procedures across all projects and regions, supporting the firm’s goals for quality, client satisfaction, and operational excellence.

James brings more than 20 years of industry experience, beginning in homebuilding as a teenager and later leading commercial, faith-based, and multi-family projects as a general contractor. Known for his collaborative leadership style and dedication to ethical building practices, he is passionate about cultivating strong project teams and mentoring the next generation of construction professionals.

We recently sat down with James to learn more about his career journey, leadership approach, and passions outside of work.

What inspired you to pursue a career in the construction industry?

I started really young — before I was even a teenager — building homes with my dad and some of his friends. Funny enough, my dad isn’t in construction at all; he’s an IT guy. But I loved working with my hands from early on. I was always building things — even rubber band guns with hand tools. That passion just naturally led me into the field, and I’ve enjoyed every step of the journey since.

How would you describe your leadership style?

I’m definitely a shoulder-to-shoulder type of leader. I like to be in the trenches with my team, showing them that I’m right there with them. Leading by example is really important to me. Of course, leadership also involves giving direction and casting vision, but that’s easier to do when you’re actively involved and supporting your team in real ways.

What part of your job brings you the most joy or fulfillment?

Seeing a job well done is incredibly fulfilling. But even more than that, I love when we do something better than we did on the last project. That constant improvement — building on past success — is what really drives me.

Is this your first time working in the architecture and engineering space?

Yes, it is. I’ve always been on the GC (General Contractor) side of things, so this is a new angle for me. The transition has been good. I’ve spent the last few years in more of a design-build environment, working closely with architects and developers. That collaboration has always been something I’ve enjoyed, and it’s helped prepare me for this new chapter.

Who has been a mentor to you throughout your career?

Several people, actually. My dad has been a big influence — not just early on, but throughout my career. He helped me navigate some major transitions, like running my own LLC for about six years, then moving into roles like estimator, project manager, and later into senior project management and business development.

Also, my sister and her husband have been a big help on the business and financial side of things. I’ve always appreciated their guidance on how to shape not just my career, but also how to support those around me. I’ve been a fan of the Dave Ramsey approach, and I try to apply that philosophy to the financial management of my projects as well.

How does Parkhill’s mission of Building Community resonate with you?

To me, it’s about building with intention and pushing the limits with invention. I’m all about continuous improvement — thinking outside the box, bringing people together, and making things better project after project. That mindset is what I bring to every build.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work? Any passions or hobbies?

I’ve got two boys — one’s almost 15 and the other is almost 12 — so we’re deep into the high school and junior high world. I coach a lot of baseball and have been doing that for nearly a decade. We play travel ball all over Texas and even outside the state.

Aside from baseball, I love hunting and fishing. We just went golfing last week as a family, so we like to stay active. We’re getting ready for dove season now, which is always something we look forward to.
