Amarillo College Innovation Outpost
In 2018, Amarillo College set out to create a transformative innovation center that would serve the entire Amarillo community. Through discussions with industry leaders and community members, three key themes emerged: problem-solving, prototyping, and entrepreneurship. These themes shaped the center’s three programmatic zones: making, developing, and thinking.

Bridging the Past and Future
The project involved renovating an existing building on Amarillo College’s Downtown Campus, adding 10,000 square feet for a total of more than 35,500 square feet. This expansion allowed for the creation of a new exterior and a welcoming plaza, blending the city’s industrial roots with modern technology.
Expanding Possibilities
The design features distressed gauged porcelain tile, symbolizing the local industry, and an original 1921 boiler transformed into a sculptural element at the entrance. Inside, an industrial aesthetic is complemented by modern touches, such as perforated wood ceiling panels in the Commons and mixed metal fixtures like 1940s-style pipe-supported vanities. A key feature, the mirrored wall, reflects the historic surroundings and symbolizes Amarillo’s potential for growth. This mirror, positioned behind an exterior elevated stage with a grassy lawn, provides a space for community gathering and reflection.

Reflecting History, Inspiring Progress
Named the Innovation Outpost, this center is more than a building; it’s a hub for creativity and progress. By honoring the past and embracing the future, the Innovation Outpost inspires Amarillo to innovate, collaborate, and build a better tomorrow, making it a beacon of hope and advancement for the entire community.
