Amarillo-Polk St. Streetscape Improvement
For generations, Polk Street has been at the heart of downtown Amarillo. Parkhill’s streetscape design builds on that history while making eight blocks of the corridor safer, more accessible and inviting for the people who use it every day. Aging sidewalks and infrastructure were replaced with accessible pedestrian routes, improved driveways and crossings, drainage improvements, lighting, street trees and furnishings. The result is more than an infrastructure upgrade—it is a renewed public space that makes moving through and spending time downtown easier and more enjoyable.
Listening from Doorstep to Design
The design began with the people along Polk Street. Parkhill worked closely with property owners, tenants and community members through door-to-door outreach, individual conversations and public meetings. Their input helped address concerns, build support and shape a design that balanced community priorities with the City’s budget.
Designing for the Street-Level Experience
Every improvement works together to make the corridor more comfortable and connected. Level sidewalks and accessible routes remove barriers, while lighting, trees, benches, bike racks and other amenities transform the streetscape into a place designed as much for people as for movement.
Keeping Downtown Moving
That same focus on people continued through construction. Ongoing communication and coordination helped maintain access to businesses and properties while minimizing disruption. Completed ahead of schedule and under budget, the project delivered lasting improvements while respecting the community’s investment.
