Borger Dome Convention Center
In the late 1950s, Borger, Texas, riding the wave of an oil boom, became home to a unique architectural marvel—the first Kaiser Aluminum Dome in the continental U.S. For decades, “The Dome” stood as a central venue for community events, but as time passed, the facility became outdated, with no insulation or modern systems, limiting its use. Faced with a desire to preserve this iconic structure, city leadership opted for a bold renovation.

A Balance of Past and Future
A facility assessment revealed that the Dome’s aluminum panels and structure were still in excellent condition, offering an opportunity to modernize the facility without sacrificing its historic design. The solution? A multipurpose convention center, with the Dome at its heart. On the west end, the renovated Dome now features a custom aluminum interior frame, supporting insulated ceiling panels, electrical systems, and fire suppression. With a new entrance, HVAC, lighting, and storage areas, the Dome is fully functional for year-round events.
Multipurpose Spaces
The east side introduces a new multipurpose ballroom, complete with floor-to-ceiling windows, acoustical ceilings, and folding partitions, designed for flexibility. The center space connects the two anchors, offering offices, conference rooms, a catering kitchen, and a lobby.

Outdoor Integration
Surrounded by public green spaces, the design integrates seamlessly into Borger’s natural and industrial landscape. A new parking lot supports outdoor events, while a refurbished oil refinery and an outdoor learning garden showcase Borger’s rich petroleum and agricultural heritage. The project not only revitalizes a beloved landmark but also strengthens Borger’s community spirit for generations to come.
