Consolidation Leads to Innovation by Redefining Learning Spaces

In response to the 2018 bond election, Lubbock ISD embarked on a school consolidation initiative, merging three underutilized elementary schools into one. This move allowed the district to create a new facility aligned with their vision of a student-centered and progressive educational environment. Parkhill took this vision to heart, embedding it into the planning of educational specifications that now set the standard for all future elementary capital projects.

Learning Neighborhoods

Carmona-Harrison Elementary is the first school built entirely on this foundation. Each grade level is grouped into learning neighborhoods that include collaboration spaces, professional learning areas, and intervention rooms. At the center of the design is the library/media center, filled with natural light and prominently positioned to inspire curiosity and a love for learning.

At the Heart of Learning

Adjacent to the media center are specialized spaces, including art rooms and a STEAM lab, which serve as maker spaces for hands-on, creative exploration. Together, these spaces form the “heart” of the school, sparking excitement in students and preparing them for future learning opportunities.
