City of Denton Landfill Permit Amendment

Why Expanding Landfill Capacity is Essential for Sustainable Waste Management

With the City of Denton Landfill experiencing increased daily waste acceptance and the impending closure of a nearby DFW landfill, Parkhill was authorized in April 2016 to prepare a permit application for both vertical and horizontal expansion.

Preparing for Increased Waste Acceptance

The planned expansion allows the landfill to grow approximately 130 feet higher and extend 161.3 acres to the north, increasing its total capacity to support Denton and surrounding areas for an additional 72 years.

Comprehensive Planning and Approval Process

Parkhill’s role included preparing the permit application, coordinating with TCEQ, conducting public meetings, and ensuring compliance with local and state regulations. The application involved designing landfill features such as excavation plans, drainage, gas collection systems, leachate collection, and final closure plans. The initial application was submitted to TCEQ in January 2017 and approved in August 2021.

Ongoing Modifications and Future Plans

While awaiting approval of the new permit, Parkhill assisted the City of Denton with modifications to the existing permit, including authorizing the use of AiroPure as an odor neutralizer and adjusting the Site Operating Plan.
