Dyess AFB Addition to C-130J Flight Simulator Training Facility (HWH)

Innovation Takes Flight at Dyess Air Force Base

The new C-130J Flight Simulator facility at Dyess Air Force Base represents a bold commitment to innovation and resilience. This 6,000 GSF structure is more than a building; it’s a gateway to advanced training for the next generation of pilots. Designed to house the massive simulator in a 50′ x 50′ x 50′ space, the facility is engineered to withstand West Texas’s intense wind loads—all while meeting strict budgetary constraints.

Rethinking Design for Efficiency and Strength

Initially planned as a structural steel frame with a masonry veneer, the project shifted to a Design-Build delivery method to align with budget realities. By incorporating composite insulated metal panels instead of masonry, the structure became significantly lighter, reducing both material and overall costs. This adjustment preserved the original design intent while achieving the flexibility needed for cost-efficient construction.

Smart Systems, Smarter Savings

The facility’s mechanical systems also underwent a transformative redesign. A pre-manufactured package unit was replaced with a split boiler and chilled water system, offering equivalent heating and cooling capacity at a fraction of the cost. These design optimizations showcase how innovative thinking can achieve exceptional outcomes under challenging conditions. At its core, this project exemplifies adaptability and purpose, preparing Dyess Air Force Base for mission-critical success.
