Fort Sam Houston Dormitory 1002 Renovation (HWH D/B)

A Challenge Unearthed
Demolition revealed the extent of damage: rusted load-bearing studs and inadequate drainage systems had allowed moisture to wreak havoc. Mold and mildew had infiltrated the interior walls, creating serious indoor air quality issues. Each building required forensic structural analysis, shoring, and the replacement or reinforcement of metal studs. This painstaking work was coupled with progressive collapse prevention measures, including the addition of steel tube frames to meet Anti-Terrorism Force Protection standards.
A Holistic Rebuild
Beyond structural repairs, the project addressed fundamental design flaws. A deeper brick ledge and enhanced air cavities improved drainage and moisture control, while modern MEP systems were installed to manage humidity and ensure energy efficiency. Every interior finish was replaced with durable, sustainable materials, providing a clean, safe environment.

A New Era for the Residents
The result? Buildings with extended lifespans, fortified against environmental and structural challenges. These rehabilitated dormitories stand as a testament to innovative engineering, offering residents a safe, healthy, and energy-efficient place to call home.
