Lubbock ISD 2018 Bond High School AgSTEM Complex

Agricultural Innovation Takes Root Through a Leading-Edge AgSTEM Education Hub

The new AgSTEM complex for the Lubbock Independent School District (LISD) is a groundbreaking space dedicated to the future of agriculture education. Located at the intersection of 4th St. and Quaker Ave., this facility serves all four high schools in the LISD system, making agricultural education accessible to every student. It’s more than just about farming; it’s about planting the seeds of opportunity and innovation. The location is central and strategic, offering easy access via the Marsha Sharp Expressway and North Loop 289, ensuring efficient and economical busing for students. Its proximity to Texas Tech University, the USDA, and other industry partners fosters collaboration, blending high school education with real-world agricultural science.

Building a Safe and Sustainable Future

Building on this site, however, presents challenges. Situated within a 100-year floodplain, the project requires significant elevation work to ensure safety. The team is elevating the land so that all structures are at least one foot above the floodplain, while also preserving natural water flow paths to protect the environment.
The complex is thoughtfully designed for both function and community. Animal barns are located in the northwest corner to minimize odors near retail areas, and the main classroom building faces Quaker Ave., creating a welcoming entrance. Truck and trailer traffic is concentrated in one area to reduce disruption.

Inventive Design Meets Community Needs

Inside, the facility is a hub of innovation, featuring a commercial kitchen for meat processing, plant science labs, and a greenhouse. The animal science wing includes a rail system for moving carcasses, focusing on instruction and processing without a kill floor.
The design blends modern agrarian elements with nods to the Texas Tech aesthetic, using a mix of brick, metal panels, and limestone. A 500-person arena and extensive parking support various community events, making the complex a versatile asset.
The LISD AgSTEM complex is a place where students connect with the land, develop essential skills, and prepare to lead in the agricultural industry, growing beyond the classroom.
