Midland International Air and Space Port (MAF) Security Checkpoint Expansion
With increasing enplanements at Midland International Air & Space Port (MAF), long TSA security lines often backed up onto the escalators, creating safety hazards. To address this, MAF engaged Parkhill to design a solution that would improve passenger flow and reduce bottlenecks. During peak times, queuing lines would extend 20 to 30 feet into the lobby, forcing the emergency stop button on the escalator to be pressed repeatedly.

Safety First
Parkhill proposed expanding the concourse level near the TSA checkpoint, adding extra space for queuing. The design maintained the open, spacious feel of the lobby by incorporating a curved walkway bridge that linked the expanded area with the existing queuing space. Discussions with TSA led to reorienting the checkpoint 90 degrees, providing a longer screening area and meeting TSA’s space requirements for both pre- and post-screening.
Automation and Innovation
Another key improvement was the installation of an automated exit lane system, eliminating the need for a TSA staff member to monitor the exit point. This system uses sensors to detect reverse movement, enhancing security without additional manpower. Completed in June 2019, the redesign has improved safety, enhanced passenger flow, and modernized MAF’s security operations.
