Runway 12-30 Reconstruction

Aging Runways Get New Life With Strategic Runway Improvements

The City of Artesia tasked Parkhill with investigating the aging pavement structure of Runway 12/30 at Artesia Municipal Airport, aiming to bring the nearly 70-year-old runway up to modern standards. Parkhill’s comprehensive evaluation led to a plan that included reducing the runway’s width from 150 feet to 100 feet, relocating the Runway 30 threshold by 740 feet, upgrading runway edge lights, and replacing outdated navigation aids with a Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) system.

Safety First

Through a Preliminary Engineering Report, Parkhill conducted a pavement inspection, geotechnical investigations, and airspace analysis using FAA guidelines. These efforts informed the scope and sequence of the runway improvements. Notably, a late addition involved designing a new taxiway to enhance safety, as Parkhill identified a hazard with the existing runway-end aligned taxiway.

Maximizing FAA Support

The expansion also focuses on security, adding space for three full-size screening lanes to streamline the checkpoint process. Escalators will be replaced, potentially with elevators for improved accessibility.
