TxDOT — US-82 Realignment
For years, westbound motorists traveling at 75 MPH on US 82 near Mabelle, Texas, faced a hazardous horizontal curve just beyond US 183. This outdated alignment frequently caused trucks to veer off the highway, posing significant safety risks. With lanes diverging up to 250 feet apart and bisected by a drainage area of 831 acres, the roadway demanded a modern, safer design. Parkhill stepped in to realign the eastbound lanes, creating a geometric design focused on safety and efficiency.

Comprehensive Design for Safer Travel
Parkhill’s redesign included extending CR 237 to meet the realigned westbound lanes of US 82, updating superelevation data, and lengthening a bridge-class culvert to 175 feet. Additional improvements encompassed two inlet connections, a new culvert under CR 237, regrading the old roadbed, and installing updated signage and pavement markings. Special attention was given to Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SW3P) to ensure compliance and environmental stewardship.
Collaboration and Flexibility Lead to Success
Maintaining traffic flow was critical during construction. Parkhill collaborated with TxDOT to create a Traffic Control Plan that kept the US 183 and US 82 intersections open while providing flexibility for contractors. The project’s success earned praise from the TxDOT Area Engineer, showcasing the power of innovative design and teamwork in transforming infrastructure.
