Parkhill's designs for the El Paso Waterparks Camp Cohen, Chapoteo, and Lost Kingdom, and for the City of Amarillo Thompson Park Pool were recognized in Athletic Business Magazine as part of the 2022 Aquatic Design Portfolio. The portfolio features 33 aquatics projects that have enhanced communities across the country.
Following the overwhelming approval of the 2012 Quality of Life Bond, the City of El Paso began an initiative to deliver recreational facilities for community enjoyment. As part of a master plan created by Western Technology Inc. in 2016, Parkhill provided architectural design services for three waterparks: Camp Cohen, Chapoteo, and Lost Kingdom. Each park is strategically located throughout the city to allow citizens localized access. Each park includes a leisure pool, a lap pool, a kiddie pool, water slides, a climbing wall, a water playground, a lazy river, a concessions area, and cabanas. Varying themes make each park a unique destination.
After a tremendous outpouring of input from a community survey, the City of Amarillo was granted funding to update the 87-year-old Thompson Park Pool. The six-acre, outdoor community aquatic center received a complete renovation and features a lazy river, a zero-depth entry leisure pool, and a water-slide complex, alongside a brand-new concessions area and party pavilion. Thompson Park Pool is now considered the largest public aquatic center within the area of the Texas Panhandle.
