With a new pool full of beach balls, the City of Amarillo celebrated the grand opening of Amarillo’s Thompson Park Swimming Pool. The pool replaced an 87-year-old facility and also added a lazy river, and a waterslide complex. Mayor Amarillo Ginger Nelson is grateful for the success of the Thompson Park Pool.
“We were very intentional in the elements that were chosen to be a part of this facility, and we had a very tight budget," Nelson told Parkhill videographer Brad Tollefson. "Parkhill knew that going in, and they worked very hard to ‘right-size’ the project so we could still have the amenities like the lazy river and the fun slides and still stay on budget. A lot of that has to do with listening to what citizens asked for in designing the pool and knowing that council had in mind – and they did that very well."
Michael Kashuba, Director of Parks and Recreation, applauded the dexterity of the team led by Chad Dietz of Parkhill.
“We had some changes on the fly," said Kashuba, "and we worked with Chad and his team on making those adjustments so that we ended up with this project at the end of the day. We’ve had great reviews so far. The No.1 part of the feedback was the lazy river.”
The project also features a zero-edge entry pool, and an active play environment with the volleyball and basketball courts," Dietz said.
“Parkhill has just been honored to be a part of the community and bringing improvements to the community. There are materials that are very unique that you won’t see a lot of places. That’s what has been enjoyable in working with the project team.”
