We are thrilled to announce that Kim Hooker, AIA, LEED AP, CDT, RAS, APAC-BE, has been honored with the Accessibility Professionals Association (APA) President’s Award for her outstanding dedication and service to APA’s mission. Kim is a senior architect and member of Parkhill's Higher Education Sector. Her experience and passion include facility and accessibility assessment.

“Texas has an impressive program to remove architectural barriers through adopted laws and enforcement of the 2012 Texas Accessibility Standards (2102 TAS),” she said. “Requirements increase accountability, and more accessible buildings and spaces are built all the time.”

For several years, Kim chaired the Technical Standards Committee, focusing on the Texas Accessibility Standards. Most recently, she led the National Technical Standards Committee, expanding her scope to address accessibility compliance documents such as State and Local Building Laws, the Fair Housing Act (FHA), and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The committee’s goals include advocacy and active participation in the development and review of accessibility codes and standards.

“I joined the Accessibility Professionals Association (APA) and was surrounded by passionate colleagues who were willing to share,” Kim said. “When you volunteer, you gain so much by diving in. The APA has national membership with high-powered experts. I facilitate and listen -but these folks are experts. It has been a real experience to gain new insight.”

The APA provides a forum, resources, and continuing education for professionals dedicated to improving accessibility in the built environment. Its members include accessibility specialists, architects, interior designers, engineers, ADA coordinators, and building officials, all working toward a more inclusive world.

Please join us in congratulating Kim on this incredible honor and for her continued efforts to make the built environment more accessible for people of all abilities!
