College, High School Students Get Inside Look at Interior Design

Two groups of Lubbock high school students and college students from Texas Tech University received an inside look at Parkhill, Smith & Cooper’s Lubbock office on Wednesday as part of a program to help expose students to various parts of interior design. 

The Lubbock Monterey High School Interior Design Class, including juniors and seniors, were participants of a three-part guided tour Wednesday with Associate and interior designer Britni Wilkens. The tour began at the Officewise furniture dealership in downtown Lubbock where the students learned that interior design can be practiced through furniture expertise. They sat in various ergonomic seating types, learned about electrified tabletops and were introduced to hundreds of furniture manufacturers. Next, the students visited Parkhill where various professional opportunities relating to the industry were discussed. The students explored the materials library and watched a demonstration on furniture placement in Revit, using furniture they saw at Officewise. 

The tour concluded at Texas Tech University where the students toured the Department of Design and observed an interior design studio class in action. 

Students from Texas Tech University Department of Design toured Parkhill as well on Wednesday with Parkhill interior designer Jana Forbes. The tour focused on sustainable materials where Jana discussed sustainable practices carried out in the East Building, which was the first LEED building in the region. She also showed a large variety of interior materials that when selected and installed, contribute to the sustainable practices and operations of buildings.
