VAN HORN, Texas — Culberson County-Allamoore Independent School District has planned a ribbon-cutting for the new school in Van Horn at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at 200 W. 7th Street. The all-in-one consolidated school for pre-K to 12th grades includes science labs, a metals shop, a woodworking shop, a robotics lab, and a competition gym with sound treatments and bleachers for both visitors and home fans. A new auxiliary gym, coaches’ suite, and locker rooms for players are also featured. Access control at the entrances of the building makes the entire facility safer. 

Flexible learning spaces include movable glass partitions and lots of natural light, and flexibility for the collaboration pods brings natural light into several of the classroom wings. The central pod space can be used as a break-out teaching space or gathering space. 

As a tribute to the school’s mascot, the entranceway evokes eagle’s wings. The most captivating feature of the administration area and library is the clear glass on the main façade. 

The classroom wings feature 21st-Century Learning concepts with folding walls, openness, an abundance of natural light, and a hub space in the center to which classrooms or studios can expand, transforming the hub into a collaborative teaching space. The design addressed space issues, security, and temperature control. 

The school will have three academic wings with expansive corridors that double as collaboration pods, teaching space, or a gathering area. Featured in the Commons will be a state-of-the-art kitchen and dining area, a portable stage for various functions, television screens for educational purposes, striking red accents contrasting with neutrals, and a multi-level vaulted skylight archway. 

The design also incorporates a new playground, landscaping, and separate drop-off sites for buses and cars.
