The ACEC Texas has chosen Parkhill’s 3-D scan survey of the Texas School for the Deaf campus as the gold medal recipient for the 2017 Engineering Excellence Awards in the surveying and mapping category. As a result of receiving this prestigious state-level award, the project will be considered for national recognition by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) in spring 2017.
The innovative 3-D scan survey of the Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) – one of the largest 3-D scans completed in Texas – resulted in 3.76 billion points of information collected across the more than 60-acre campus. On a recent traditional survey of a school campus, Parkhill’s survey team collected an average of 130 points per acre. In contrast, with the TSD 3-D scan survey, an average of nearly 56 million points per acre were collected. This abundance of information was overlaid with fish-eye lens photographs, creating a digital replica of the campus that could be accessed for measurements at any time.
About the ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards
The Engineering Excellence Awards Competition has been held by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Texas since its inception in 1975 to honor and recognize outstanding achievements within the engineering community.
For the 2017 awards, the distinguished panel of judges from around the state selected 10 gold medal- and nine silver-medal-winning projects based on uniqueness, originality, technicality, value to the engineering profession, complexity, and how successfully the project met the needs of the client.
